Kindergarten Thursday Teacher Tip: Designate a Learning Space

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

We hope you are enjoying these hot summer days!  As you know, the school system has decided to begin the school year virtually.  Although we are disappointed we won’t be meeting your child in person for the time being, we want you to know that there is a lot of planning going on behind the scenes to set us up for a great school year!  We are so excited to get to know you and your student in just six short weeks!

The Ducketts Lane Kindergarten team wanted to provide a few tips over these final summer weeks to support you and your child as we transition into the upcoming school year.  We will continue to send out suggestions that we think may benefit our kindergarten families each Thursday.

Thursday Teacher Tip: Provide a designated learning space for your child to use during school hours.  Pick out this location in your home together.  This spot should be permanent within your home and used each day for school. By creating a designated space that has limited distractions, your child will be able to recognize school time versus play time at home!

Things to consider for your designated learning space:

  • School supplies: Within your home learning space, provide school supplies that are easy to access.  Some items we use in kindergarten are: pencil, paper or journal, scissors, glue stick, markers and crayons.  We will provide more detailed information as we approach the school year about learning materials.

  • Headphones: These are not required, but help with limiting distractions for your learner.

  • Timer: Using a timer can help students understand the time needed to complete tasks for school and around the house!  Starting to use a timer to complete chores at home over the summer will help ease the transition to school related tasks in the fall!

We know that this is not what kindergarten typically looks like, but we promise that we will work together to create a positive school experience for your student!  We are hopeful these little tips will help ease both parent and student nerves as we begin the school year!  We are following the HCPSS guidelines for summer and back to school activities.  As of right now, no in person events are scheduled.  We will continue to update families as we learn more.

We want you to know we truly appreciate your patience as we navigate this unique school year together.  We are looking forward to meeting you and your kindergartener in a few weeks!
